Women Colleagues

Dr. Betty

In the fall of 2007, I was considering joining the Women’s Fund because my husband was working for the Winston-Salem Foundation at the time and he encouraged me to join.  Shortly, thereafter, I got a call from my dear friend Dr. Betty Alexander telling me about the Women’s Fund and her desire to create a group of 12 members so she could become a member.   She needed 12 members and asked me if I would consider joining her group.  I told her I was planning on joining, but would consider her request because some of the women she had asked to join her group were women I respected, admired, and with whom I had similar interests.

Subsequently, the prospective members met at the Cotton Mill restaurant in the Brookstown Inn to discuss what our membership in the Women’s Fund would look like.  At this luncheon meeting, we decided on our organizational structure, our name (The ACEY Group and it’s ensuing acronym), and the rules of engagement with the Fund that included:   meeting the 2nd Saturday of each month from September-June, we would meet over lunch from 12-2 p.m., each member would join a committee, each member would report to the group on the actions of the committee, and lastly we would engage in other relevant activities in the community.   At this meeting, we decided not to have a formal meeting structure, but rather to have a more informal structure.  Therefore, minimally, we agreed that Dr. Betty would lead the group; Mildred would serve as the recorder/secretary; and later, as we began to engage in more community involvement helping girls and women in our community to achieve their full potential, I would serve as the treasurer.

In the ensuing years Dr. Leila Vickers became the first charter member to become a member of the Women’s Fund Board.  Nearly 7 years later, I became chair of the Grants Committee and therefore became our second charter member to become a member of the board.  Later on I became the Vice-Chair of the Board and Chair of the Board.  During my first term on the board LaToya Cheek became our 3rd member of the board and later she became the Treasurer of the Board. Lastly, Claudia Kennedy joined the board by becoming chair of the Events Committee.
